POLITICAL BANDITRY AND THE AUDACITY OF CRIMINALITY..by Livy-Elcon Emereonye.

There comes a point in the moral collapse of a society when criminals stop hiding. They no longer whisper in dark corners. They no longer fear exposure. They no longer tremble at the mention of the law. They emerge into the open. They acquire political godfathers. They become political godfathers. They finance campaigns. They command followers. They distribute money. They manipulate elections. They intimidate opponents. They capture institutions. They parade themselves in convoys. They shake hands with dignitaries. They mount podiums. They make speeches about morality. And, most tragically, society begins to call them leaders. That is the frightening face of political banditry. Political banditry is what happens when politics ceases to be a noble contest for public service and becomes a criminal enterprise for the capture, control and exploitation of public power. It is politics without conscience. It is ambition without morality. It is power without responsibility. It is criminality wearing the agbada of statesmanship. And its greatest weapon is not always the gun.Sometimes, it is money.Sometimes, it is fear.Sometimes, it is propaganda.Sometimes, it is ethnic sentiment.Sometimes, it is religious manipulation.Sometimes, it is the abuse of state institutions.Sometimes, it is simply the frightening confidence that nothing will happen. That confidence is the audacity of criminality.WHEN THE CRIMINAL STOPS FEARING THE LAW. Every functioning society is built on a simple understanding: wrongdoing has consequences.Break the law, and you face the law. Steal, and you are investigated.Commit violence, and you are prosecuted.Abuse public office, and you are held accountable. But political banditry begins where this social contract ends. The political criminal does not merely break the law. He attempts to own the environment in which the law operates. He seeks connections. He builds networks. He cultivates protectors. He finances political structures. He surrounds himself with loyalists. He makes himself indispensable to people who should ordinarily investigate him. Then something terrifying happens. He stops asking: “Will I be punished?” He begins asking:“Who is powerful enough to punish me?” That is the psychological birth of impunity. And once a criminal discovers that political power can protect him from consequences, his criminality becomes bolder. The thief becomes a kingmaker. The thug becomes a political mobiliser. The fraudster becomes a philanthropist. The corrupt contractor becomes a political financier. The intimidator becomes a “strongman.” And the society, intoxicated by money and political expediency, begins to applaud the very people who are destroying it. What madness! POLITICAL BANDITRY IS NOT LEADERSHIP. Let us stop deceiving ourselves.A man who intimidates citizens is not a leader.A politician who buys votes is not generous.A public official who steals public resources is not an astute political operator.A political godfather who determines candidates through money and coercion is not a democrat. A thug who delivers votes through violence is not a political strategist. A politician who weaponises government agencies against opponents is not exercising leadership. He is abusing power. We must call things by their proper names.Criminality does not become leadership because it wears a designer suit.Corruption does not become patriotism because the corrupt person speaks eloquently.Intimidation does not become political sophistication because it is executed by men with security escorts. And theft does not become development simply because a fraction of the stolen money is used to build a road or distribute gifts. A thief remains a thief even when he remembers to smile for the camera.

THE POLITICS OF FEAR....Political banditry feeds on fear.It wants citizens to be frightened. It wants journalists cautious. It wants opposition silent. It wants civil servants obedient. It wants political competitors intimidated. It wants voters dependent. The political bandit understands something that every authoritarian understands: A frightened population is easier to control than a courageous one. So fear becomes a political instrument.Threats are issued.Opponents are harassed.Meetings are disrupted.Political gatherings are attacked.False accusations are manufactured.Online armies are unleashed.Character assassination becomes routine. Government machinery is sometimes deployed selectively. And all of this is presented as politics. No! It is not politics. It is political intimidation. It is the criminalisation of democratic competition. Democracy says:Convince me.Political banditry says:Obey me.Democracy says:Defeat me with your ideas.Political banditry says:Fear me.Democracy says:The people decide.Political banditry says:I decide who the people are allowed to choose. The difference could not be clearer. THE BALLOT BOX MUST NOT BECOME A CRIME SCENE. Elections should be festivals of democratic choice.Unfortunately, political banditry can transform elections into battlegrounds. Instead of asking citizens what they intend to do about unemployment, insecurity, healthcare, education, infrastructure, industrialisation and economic growth, political criminals ask a more primitive question: “How do we capture the election? ” Money begins to flow.Thugs are mobilised.Voters are induced.Opponents are threatened.Falsehood is weaponised.Political machinery is activated. And the election becomes less about who deserves to govern and more about who can manipulate the process most effectively. That is electoral banditry. And it is an insult to every citizen who believes that his or her vote should matter.

VOTE BUYING: THE CHEAPEST WAY TO BUY AN EXPENSIVE FUTURE. Let us be brutally honest about vote buying. The politician who gives you money for your vote is not helping you.He is investing in himself. He is purchasing access to public resources. He is buying the opportunity to govern you.He is making a business investment. And you may pay the dividends for four or eight years. The money may disappear in a day.The consequences of your choice may remain for years.A bag of rice cannot repair a destroyed healthcare system. A few thousand naira cannot build a functioning economy. A temporary cash gift cannot replace employment. A political gift cannot compensate for insecurity.

And no amount of campaign generosity can justify the theft of a nation’s future. So citizens must become wiser. **Collect whatever lawful benefits are legitimately available to you, but do not sell your conscience.Take the inducement if you must, but remember that your vote belongs to you. Do not allow a politician to purchase your future for the price of a meal.THE POLITICAL CONTRACTOR: THE PROFESSIONAL MERCENARYPolitical banditry has created another dangerous character—the political contractor. This is the individual who turns politics into a business of manipulation. He recruits crowds. He mobilises thugs. He spreads propaganda. He attacks opponents. He manufactures narratives. He distributes inducements. He intimidates communities. He sometimes uses violence. And after the election, he expects payment. The politician who employs such people may pretend not to know them when trouble comes. But society must ask a simple question:Who financed the machinery of intimidation? The visible thug may be the hand. But who is the brain?Who supplied the money?Who gave the instruction?Who promised protection?Who benefited? These questions must be asked.Because it is intellectually dishonest to condemn the foot soldier while pretending that the political commander does not exist.WHEN CRIMINALS BECOME ROLE MODELSPerhaps the most frightening consequence of political banditry is what it teaches the young.Imagine a young Nigerian watching a man accumulate questionable wealth, intimidate people, manipulate political structures and eventually become a celebrated political figure. What lesson does that young person learn? That education is unnecessary? That hard work is for fools? That integrity is a weakness? That connections are more valuable than competence? That criminality is acceptable if one becomes powerful enough? That is how a nation destroys its moral future.

A society teaches through what it rewards. If it rewards integrity, people pursue integrity. If it rewards competence, people pursue competence. If it rewards criminality, people pursue criminality. If it celebrates the politically connected criminal, do not be surprised when the next generation begins to aspire not to become doctors, engineers, teachers, scientists and entrepreneurs—but political predators. THE WORST CRIMINAL IS THE ONE WHO CAPTURES THE STATE. An ordinary criminal steals from the state. A political criminal may attempt something far more dangerous:He may capture the state itself. When that happens, the institutions created to protect citizens can become instruments of private power. The police can be manipulated. The bureaucracy can be compromised.Public contracts can become patronage. Appointments can become rewards for loyalty. Political opponents can become targets. Public resources can become private instruments. And the state gradually ceases to belong to the people. It becomes the property of a political network. This is why political banditry must never be dismissed as ordinary politics. It is a threat to the foundations of the republic.

THE COWARDICE OF SILENCE………….

There is another group that must be confronted: the silent beneficiaries. Those who know what is happening but remain silent because they are benefiting. Those who condemn corruption publicly but celebrate corrupt politicians privately. Those who scream when their opponent steals but become philosophical when their preferred politician steals. Those who demand justice when their friends are victims but demand forgiveness when their allies are accused. This hypocrisy is one of the greatest fertilizers of political criminality.

Let us be blunt: If you defend corruption because the corrupt person belongs to your political camp, you are part of the problem. If you defend violence because your candidate benefits from it, you are part of the problem. THE LAW MUST BECOME FEARLESS. The greatest antidote to the audacity of criminality is consequence. Not speeches. Not condemnation. Not hashtags. Not political promises, but Consequences. The law must become fearless. It must not ask whether the accused is rich.It must not ask whether he is connected. It must not ask which party he belongs to.It must not ask what ethnic group he comes from.It must ask one question:Was the law broken? If yes, investigate. If the evidence supports prosecution, prosecute. If guilt is established, punish according to law. That is how a society restores respect for the law. A justice system that becomes courageous before the weak but timid before the powerful is not justice. It is theatre.

CITIZENS MUST RECLAIM THEIR POWER…But politicians are not the only problem.Citizens must reclaim their democratic authority. The electorate must understand that political power does not belong permanently to anyone. The politician is a tenant. The people are the landlords. The politician occupies office temporarily. The people own the sovereignty. The politician cannot legitimately say:“This is my government.”It is not.It belongs to the people. The politician cannot say:“These are my resources.”They are not. They belong to the public. The politician cannot say:“These citizens are my subjects.”They are not. They are citizens. And the citizen must remember this whenever intimidation begins.

THE BALLOT MUST BE STRONGER THAN THE BULLET… Political banditry ultimately survives when citizens surrender their power. The cure is therefore not another bandit. It is a better citizen.A citizen who asks questions. A citizen who investigates candidates. A citizen who examines records.A citizen who rejects ethnic manipulation.A citizen who refuses political enslavement. A citizen who understands that the person asking for his vote today may control the resources that determine his family’s future tomorrow. The ballot must become stronger than the bullet. The law must become stronger than the godfather. The truth must become stronger than propaganda. Competence must become stronger than connection.Character must become stronger than cash. And public interest must become stronger than private greed.

ENOUGH OF THE POLITICAL BANDITS. We must stop romanticising political predators. We must stop calling every wealthy politician a leader. We must stop giving titles to people whose principal achievement is the accumulation of influence. We must stop mistaking fear for respect. We must stop mistaking political control for leadership. We must stop celebrating people simply because they can mobilise crowds, manipulate elections or distribute money.Leadership is not the ability to make people tremble.Leadership is the ability to make society better.Leadership is service.Leadership is sacrifice.Leadership is responsibility.Leadership is accountability. Leadership is character under pressure. Anything else is merely power. And power without character is a loaded weapon in the hands of a madman. THE FINAL WARNING……A nation cannot continue indefinitely on the dangerous road where criminality is rewarded, violence is tolerated, corruption is celebrated and political intimidation is treated as normal. Every society eventually pays for the behaviour it tolerates. If we tolerate political banditry today, we will inherit institutional decay tomorrow. If we reward corrupt politicians today, we will inherit poorer institutions tomorrow. If we sell our votes today, we will purchase bad governance tomorrow. If we remain silent today, our children may inherit a country where silence is the price of survival. Therefore, the choice before us is stark. We can continue to manufacture political predators and then complain about their predation.Or we can build a culture where public office is occupied by people who understand that power is borrowed, resources are held in trust and accountability is unavoidable. The political bandit must eventually discover that the people are not permanently afraid. The vote buyer must discover that money cannot permanently purchase sovereignty. The political thug must discover that intimidation cannot defeat an awakened citizenry. The corrupt official must discover that public office is not a licence to steal. And the political godfather must discover that no political empire is immortal. For there is a limit to every audacity. There is a limit to every impunity. There is a limit to every political fraud. And there must be a limit to criminality.A nation cannot be governed forever by those who mistake intimidation for leadership, corruption for sophistication, money for legitimacy and impunity for power. The people must rise. The institutions must wake up.The law must become fearless. The electorate must become wiser. And the political class must finally understand the brutal simplicity of democracy:You are not the owner of power. You are only its temporary custodian. The people gave it.The people can withdraw it. And when the people finally decide that enough is enough, even the most audacious political bandit will discover that there is something more powerful than money, muscle, propaganda and godfatherism: an awakened citizenry armed with truth, courage and the ballot. That is the beginning of the end of political banditry. And perhaps, the beginning of the recovery of the republic. The time is NOW!
