IMO STATE GOVERNMENT’S CALL FOR MEN TO MARRY MORE THAN ONE WIVES; MATTERS ARISING…By Bishop Clement Udegbe
Imo State Hon. Commissioner For Happiness, sometimes ago under the watch of Rochas Okorocha called on Imo men to consider marrying more wives in other to reduce the rate of prostitution.
When that call was made, Buhari was the President and the Economy had started wobling very badly. His appointments were all ethnic motivated. Over 90 percent of his appointees were from Northern Nigeria specifically linked to his Fulani close knit small tribe. That was the beginning of Nigeria’s Fall.
The Fulani tribe is from the Futa Djallon area of Senegal, numbering about 50 Million persons. They are scattered around the Sahel Region of Africa, mostly in West Africa, North Africa and Central Africa.
They number a little less than 15,300,000 in Nigeria (6.6%); Senegal, 5,055,782 ( 27%); Guinea 4,544,000 (33.4); Cameroon 3,000,000 (23.4 %); Mali 2,840,850(13.3%); Burkina Faso 1,800,000!(8.4%); Niger 1,650,000 ( 6.5 %); Benin 1,282,900 (8.5 %); Mauritania 900,000 (18.3 %); Guinea -Bissau 623,646 ( 30 % ); Gambia 449,2800 ( 18.2 % );Chad 334,000 ( 1.8 % ) Sierra Leone 310,000 ( 5 %).They number less than 4% in each of Central African Republic,CAR; SUDAN (0.4); Togo ( 1.2 %); Ghana ( 0.01%); Algeria (0.01%); Ivory Coast (0.02 %);South Sudan ( 0.02 % ).
I have gone into these details for two main reasons: First is to guide people, Christians,Non- Muslims for travel purposes. A Nigerian Pastor had a dehumanizing experience at the Bamako Air Port in Mali by mid-2024….Here is the Reason, Fulanis constitute 18.3 percent of Malian population. Kenya is another African Nation that treated Nigerians with disrespect in 2024, and they unlike Mali, did Apologize to Nigeria, being a Marjorly Christian Nation. The difference is clear. The second reason is to help look at the impact of Fulani terrorist’s, Bandits and Herdsmen on Nigeria. They used terrorism to wrestle power from President Jonathan in 2014 to install Buhari, who atomicized Nigeria, increased hatred among Nigerians and essentially expanded the ring of terrorism in the North, and SouthWest Nigeria. Whereas, he engaged the police and military to ensure the killing of an estimated 25,000 Youths in Igbo land. President Tinubu has continued from where Buhari stopped, offering no respite to killings in the whole Southern Nigeria, and Igbo Land.
The callous killings had created the need for action to rebuild Imo population, making the call of remedial action very worthy of good consideration. According to IPOB and other sources, over 15,000 Youths have been killed in IMO State, since 2020. Polygamy as advocated by the Honorable Commissioner, can help as a remedy and amelioration of the population depletion that IMO State has suffered.
However, the economy has become a completely different kettle of fish. Cost of living has risen astronomically high, insecurity has become worse. Every thing seems set to Kill the average Imo Son. Hardship has become a nation-wide issue, underscoring the need for states to create innovative solutions to their peculiar circumstances.
Islam allows men to marry a maximum of 4 wives provided the husband provides care and good maintenance equally for his wives. In practice,Islam seems to show stronger ethical principles than Christianity because of bad impacts of foreign ways of life, freedom, and the destruction of culture and character by major social media outlets and Western Influence. Polygamy could be part of long term solution to the issues, with its attendant challenges. The economic indexes of IMO and other Igbo States need to easily accessible.. Questions like what is the GDP, Rate of employment or unemployment. What is the competition for Jobs by women? What are the incentives to men who will embrace this call? As a very important demographic matter, a carefully prepared policy should be articulated by Igbo State Governments

Poligamy in Igbo Land should be allowed and encouraged for its population and demographic gains.
